The book referring to in the assignment is the Encyclopedia of Leadership by Hiebert and Klatt.  The name reference is mistyped as Herbert.

I see that when we talk about systems we are referring to the complexity of our environment.   The complexity of our department, the agencies and systems that we interact with and the complexities of society and how it can ebb and flow.

Understanding and optimizing the overall system is a task as complex as the bubble we work in but I can see how when we look at considering the interconnections and cause and effects it is more manageable.

It is important for leaders to think in systems because it allows us to recognize that each part of our organization actually affects one another and when there are breakdowns it's easier to explore the issues.  Now it's easier to find a way to resolve or manage the problem.  Additionally, I see that systems thinking flattens the hierarchy and acknowledges that we are all part of the overall system and thrive or wither together.
