Welcome to my ePortfolio!

I'm honored to be here at Northwestern in the School of Police Staff and Command class with all of you.  The U.S. Department of Justice has just completed a 13-month investigation here in Chicago and issued a scathing report on Friday.  The 164 page report claims that we fall woefully short on nearly every level, resulting in systematic abuse of citizens, widespread distrust and a crisis of public safety.  The report is careful to say that many Chicago police officers work courageously and selflessly, but the systematic problems throughout the department mar the reputation and work of the entire force.

The issues reported here in Chicago are also the subject of ongoing DOJ investigations and enforcements through the country.   Currently there are 22 jurisdictions enforcing consent decrees.  There are two ongoing investigations in Orange County, California and the DOJ is enforcing two agreements on Maricopa County, Ariz., a consent decree and a post-judgment order.

The timing of this class could not be better for me and has identified widespread law enforcement federal oversight.  The DOJ has detailed critical issues facing my department.  I plan to use this class to do my part to improve my agency and the overall view of law enforcement and put the knowledge gained to immediate use.
